Your domain, DNS and email in your name
Your domain name is the address of your website and email. If it isn't renewed, is changed quietly, or isn't protected, someone else can use it.

Your address online, if nobody looks after it
Domains are often registered years ago by a web vendor or a former employee, then forgotten. If one expires, someone else can buy it, along with the guests and email still heading there.
Then there's DNS, the settings that decide where your website and email point. If the registrar account is broken into, DNS can be changed quietly. And without SPF, DKIM and DMARC, anyone can send email that looks like it came from your domain.
What it means for your business
Website and email go down
An expired or altered domain means your site won't load and email won't arrive.
Fake email in your name
Without SPF, DKIM and DMARC, scammers can send invoices that appear to come from your domain.
Hard to get back
A domain that has changed hands can take time and money to recover, if it can be recovered at all.
Warning signs to look out for
Share this list with your front office, reservations and finance staff. When in doubt, ask first.
- Nobody is sure who holds your domain registrar account.
- Renewal reminders go to a former employee's or old vendor's email.
- Guests receive emails in your name that you never sent.
- Your emails often land in recipients' spam folders.
- Your website suddenly points somewhere else, or its security certificate changes.
- The registrar account doesn't use two-step verification.
